Who So Angry? |

Thank you to Brett Favre.
321 consecutive games. The man didn't miss a day of work for 19 years.
19 years. 99% of the men who play professional sports, don't have careers that last 19 years, and none of them played in every damn game.
Every day, every game, he answered the bell.
Lou Gehrig's streak lasted from 1925 to 1939.
Cal Ripken's streak lasted from 1982 to 1998.
Brett Favre streak started in 1992 and lasted until 2010, the record for a quarterback, before Favre nearly tripled it, was 116 consecutive starts by Ron Jarworski 30 years ago.
And as a story on Yahoo points out, both legendary # 4's streaks ended in Detroit.

Above is probably my most favorite photograph of all-times.
April 30, 1939, Detroit. After the legendary Lou (bleeping) Gehrig asked the legendary skipper Joe McCarthy to take him out of the line-up, sitting in the dugout, watching his teammates warm-up, just gazing, taking it all in, knowing his streak, of 2,130 straight games, covering 15 years, is over.

December 13, 2010, Detroit. hmmmm...
So why the hate?
Just because Favre went back and forth the last few years, debating on weather or not to come back or retire? What if, simply, the man wanted to play football? Hasn't what he has accomplished allowed him some extra time to make a decision?
My good best baseball buddy, is a 9x Gold Glove winning catcher playing wood bat, ametuer hardball. And after 20 years of catching, his knees and throwing shoulder is fucked up, and guess what? It has happened a few times, where, he wasn't sure if he was going to play next year. And come spring time, it is always time to play.
It is worse to not play.

Scott Boras does it again |

Over the weekend, Jayson Werth signed a double-popping eye-opening contract, first that he signed with the Washington Natinals, and then also that he got $126 million.
A $126 million for Jayson Werth, wow. I thought he'd get something in the $12 million a year range, however, Boras got him $18 million a year.
Say what you want about Scott Boras, but NOBODY can deny that he is great at what he does.
Here are some of the other WOW contracts that Boras has negotiated...
Greg Maddux, 5 years for $58 million (in 1997)
Kevin Brown, 7 years for $105 million
Bernie Williams, 7 years for $87.5 million
Alex Rodriguez, 10 years for $252 million
Barry Bonds, 5 years for $90 million (at age 37)
Adrian Beltre, 5 years for $64 million
Jason Varitek, 4 years for $40 million
Carlos Beltran, 7 years for $119 million
Magglio Ordonez, 7 years for $105 million
Kevin Millwood, 5 years for $60 million (really?)
JD Drew, 5 years for $70 million
Daisuke Matsuzaka, 6 years for $52 million, plus another $51 mil
Barry Zito, 7 years for $126 million
Alex Rodriguez, 10 years for $305 million
Andruw Jones, 2 years for $36 million (after hitting .222)
Mark Teixeira, 8 years for $180 million
Derek Lowe, 4 years for $60 million
Oliver Perez, 3 years for $36 million
Manny Ramirez, 2 years for $45 million (at age 38)
Stephen Strasburg, $15 million for the #1 pick (record for pitcher)
Matt Holliday, 7 years for $120 million
Bryce Harper, $10 million for the #1 pick (record for non-pitcher)
Jayson Werth, 7 years for $126 million
some of his other clients include...
Prince Fielder
Carlos Gonzalez
Johnny Damon
Jacoby Elsbury
Carlos Pena
Shin-Soo Choo
Jair Jurrjens
Jered Weaver
Matt Weiters
and he routinely has at least three of the top picks in each years amateur draft.
Boras is fucking great at what he does.

My beef with Boise State |
| Posted by bernieclemente on
Saturday, November 20, 2010 at
2:03:07 AM |
i got home a little early on this Friday night, and got home and flipped the channel to the World Wide Leader.
i'd like to watch Boise State games, I really would. however, when they're winning 34-0 in the third quarter, its hard to want to watch.
instead, i watched the end of a great pro basketball game between the Chicago Bulls and Dallas Mavericks, it was a tight game, between two quality teams, that came down to make plays at the end of the game, Chicago made more and won the game.
which brings me to my problem with Boise State, and also TCU, and whoever may be the rouge team three years from now...
when you wipe your inferior conference opponets, and none of your games are close, how are you to establish a fan base?
how are we to know that you're good enough to play for it all?
at least with Auburn, they are playing good teams every week, against teams with a depth of talent, where the games are at least competitive, and there is at least a chance, that the undefeated team may loose.
not when you watch the Broncos. i think i heard that there 20 first half points were the fewest they scored all season; how do we know that Boise State QB is any good, when he's playing ahead by three touchdowns every week?
if the Univeristy of Wisconsin ends up winning the Big 10, they will have done it by beating two quality opponets in Ohio State and Iowa, while suffering a loss to another good team in Michigan State. what are the good teams that Boise has had to play in Conference? when you play good teams, there are going to be close games, and I don't care who you are, nobody Wins ALL the close games, and when you don't have to play anybody good enough to play you close, it's just not as significant.
if the Badgers do finish out the season, they'd need to defeat two 7-3 teams in Michigan and Northwestern to do it, both of which probably have better players than a Nevada team who is Boise's toughest remaining game.
~~~~
i absouletely belive that Boise State and TCU deserve their spot in a BCS bowl, and i do not mean to shit on what should be pefect seasons by both schools, and believe they both got screwed last year by having to play each other (a game i didn't watch and don't know who won).
i blame the system more than either team, and as good as they are, i just don't want to see either play for the National Championship, i hope this helps explain why.
peace.
What the Matt Millen? |
fuck. how does this guy have so many fucking jobs?
NFL Network Thursday Night game
ABC College Football Saturday Afternoon game
ESPN Monday Night Football coverage
(sunday?)
why?
why? why would anyone listen to him, or believe anything he says, or believe he has any credability?
when he was in charge of the detroit lions, the teams record was...
2001 ~ 2-14
2002 ~ 3-13
2003 ~ 5-11
2004 ~ 6-10
2005 ~ 5-11
2006 ~ 3-13
2007 ~ 7-9
2008 ~ 0-16
31-97 in eight seasons. thats 24% winning, a 4-12 season on average.
i still think Isiah was worse, as the Knicks payroll was sometimes triple the salary cap, during his reign of horror, but Millen certainly has to be the worst GM in the history of the NFL...
so, why, why does he have so many jobs. why would anyone give him a job talking about football, when obviously he doesn't know what the fuck he is talking about.
and he sucks at announcing/commentating too. he's just bad. i don't believe anything his fucking blue-suit, red-tie corporate-propoganda shoving ass has to say. nothing. in fact, i have to completly ignore everything he says so i don't believe only the opposite of what he said, i don't want this fuck tainting any of my thought process.
peace.
2010 American League MVP |
| Posted by bernieclemente on
11:27:04 PM |
The winner of the 2010 American League MVP will be announced on Tuesday, and the favorite and smart money would be on Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton to win the award.
I have a problem with a player, any player, missing the month of heat-of-the-pennant race September baseball being named MVP.
(I also have a problem with Mike Vick being MVP in the NFL as he missed four games, which is a 1/4 of the season.)
Furthermore, Texas easily won a division that no other team had a winning record.
Most everyone picked Tampa Bay to finish behind New York and Boston in the East, and yet the Rays won 96 games and had the best record in the league.
Evan Longoria was the best hitter on the best team in the league and led the AL in WAR (wins above replacement, which I only mention because baseball-reference.com pushes it down our throats).
...and he doesn't seem to be getting much play for the award.
I'm just saying that the season is won in September; you don't get to play in October if you don't win in September, and if Hamilton wasn't there for that, I can't see how he is most valuable.
"For myself, 44 minutes is too much," said LeBron James, "I think Coach Spo knows that."
really dude? you're 25 years old, in the prime of your career, and the 2-time defending MVP thinks 44 minutes is too many.
in a revenge game against a rival that is now two for two against miami this season.
too many minutes.
wow.
Greatest Math Baseball Player of All-Times |
The other day, we were arguing who was the Greatest Baseball Player of All-Times.
I said Ruth, or Barry on steroids. The other argument was Cobb. And of course Boston guy always argues Teddy Ballgame.
So, took at look at the great and wonderful baseball-reference.com to see what some of the advanced metric SABR formula arithmatic numbers had to say.
And since they don't come up with same number, and who is to say which number is best, I decided to add them together for an average, MVP style voting (10 points for 1st, 1 point for 10th).
And also used some traditional baseball numbers that are actual numbers, like home runs.
I know that this isn't the most scientific or accurate method, just wondering how the numbers would turn out.
A Little Bit of Everything |
MLB
Congratulations to the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants.
I don’t see why the Giants can not become what the Atlanta Braves were in the 90s. Lincecum-Cain-Bumgarner-Sanchez, one through three, isn’t as good as Maddux-Glavine-Smoltz, however, its as good as any rotation in baseball.
They have one cornerstone offensive player, Buster Posey, ala Chipper Jones, who plays a significantly more important defensive position.
And the Giants have money. They have routinely been near the Top 10 in baseball payroll for the last 10 years, so they should be able to keep their pitching core and add some players offensively.
The Giants have already matched those Braves teams in Championships won, but there is no reason why San Francisco shouldn’t compete for the NL West for each and every year for quite awhile.
As you may have heard, and certainly will, Derek Jeter is a free agent.
The Captain has been the face of the Yankees franchise for the last decade, and it would be foolish for the young Steinbrenners to let him go.
The Yankees payroll this past season was a record $213 million, do even the Yankees have their limit?
Can they afford to outbid everyone to add Cliff Lee to a rotation that desperately needs the help? And have enough to resign Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera?
The Yankees third baseman still has 7-years and an absurd $204 million left on his ridicolus contract. If Rodriguez gets a deal that pays him $30 million a year through the age of 42, what is Jeter worth?
And where does he play?
NBA
Is it possible to talk about pro hoops and not talk about the Miami Heat? I really wanted to go somewhere else, but what is there? We all know the Lakers are the two-time defending Champions.
I will mention that Atlanta and New Orleans join the Lakers as the only undefeated teams, however, the top story has to be Miami.
They are crushing people, winning on average by 17 points a game, and they lead the NBA in scoring defense. Part of what made Michael and Scottie so dangerous was their length on the wings defensively, if LBJ and D-Wade can do the same, and force turnovers leading to easy buckets, they’ll be tough to beat.
It's good for the league to have a team that most everyone hates, ie, Cowboys, Yankees, usually that would be the Lakers, however, LeBron is easily more hateable.
Miami is still vulnerable in the post with their lack of size, and James and Wade still need to get better at being on the court at the same time.
All I know, is the Heat will continue to dominate in headlines and talk, for a long, long time.
NFL
Respect for the Green Bay Packers defense. I am a New York J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets fan, and last Sunday watched the Packers come into the Meadowlands, with a decimated defense, and shutout the Jets on their home field.
I’m not sure if the Packers lead the league in injuries, but they have to be damn close, with a majority of them on the defensive side. They even had a few guys off the street, that signed on Monday, who played six days later.
They forced three turnovers from Mark Sanchez, and held Tomlinson and Shon Greene to a combined 76 yards rushing, and posted the NFL’s first shutout of the season.
Green Bay, now leads the NFC Central, and leads the Conference is point differential and is second in scoring defense. And, their best player, Aaron Rodgers hasn’t really played that well yet.
In a conference with no great teams, I’d put them, and the defending Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints as the favorites.
NHL
Being a New York Yankees fan, naturally I am against a Salary Cap in all sports. Exhibit A for my argument against would be the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks.
After hoisting the Cup for the first time in nearly 50 years, and celebrating with a 2 million person parade, the Hawks were forced to part ways with several key players to stay under the Salary Cap.
Big man Dustin Byfuglein was traded to Atlanta. Goalie Anti Niemi was not resigned. Eagle, Sopel, Versteeg, and Ladd, all guys who contributed to the Championships, were traded out of town.
I believe a team should be allowed to defend its Championship, and also believe the NBA has the best system as it regards to the cap. Pick a number (say $70 million), and allow teams to go over, and TAX the hell out of them for doing so. If the Hawks are over the cap, and want to keep Byfuglein at $10 million a year, then they also have to pay another $10 million in luxury tax.
If it costs the Hawks double to re-sign a player, then they may not do it, however, I think it should be the teams’ choice, and they should be allowed to pursue a dynasty.
NASCAR
Four-Time Defending Champion Jimmie Johnson holds a 14-point lead of Denny Hamlin and a 38-point lead over Kevin Harvick with three races to go.
I know nothing of racing, and will not pretend as if I do.
I am rooting for Johnson though, winning multiple championships in any sport is difficult, going for 5 straight puts you in elite company. Good luck Jimmie.
College Football
I thought that Boise State and Texas Christian got screwed in last year’s BCS, when they were forced to play each other, not getting a shot at the Big Boys. And I feel sympathy for both schools that no one will play them or give them a shot.
However, I do NOT want to see a school that plays Louisiana Tech and Idaho, or that plays Colorado State and New Mexico, play for the National Championship. The easy conference wins just don’t work for me.
A 1-loss Oregon, or a 1-loss Alabama, or even a 1-loss Wisconsin or Nebraska, have a tougher road. I think that power conference bottom feeders like Iowa State or Indiana, would do pretty well against the likes of Fresno State and Wyoming.
That said, I would also be happy if Boise and TCU were the only two undefeated teams, and we had no choice but to watch them play for the National Championship.
I suppose I would support a playoff system, however, listening to the arguing about it, makes it way more fun.
College Basketball
The defending National Champion Duke Blue Devils sit in the #1 chair with a commanding lead in both the coaches and writers polls, and 6’8” Senior Forward Kyle Singler is the pre-season Player of the Year favorite.
I still like to pretend, and sometimes talk as if Gordon Hayward’s last-second half-court desperation shot went IN, and the Butler Bulldogs shocked the world, on the greatest play in the history of sports (seriously, if he had made that, name me a better play).
However, if he had made that shot, we all would have been deprived of creepy Coach K hugging his players a little too closely hugs.
(it was way easier to find a Coach K hugging picture than I thought it would be).
Still, as much as Duke may be hated, they look like the team to beat. Seniors in Singler and Nolan Smith, a 5-star freshman recruit point guard in Kyrie Irving, with Mason and Miles Plumlee providing so size down low, and with Seth Curry coming off the bench. And for next year, they have the #1 player in Austin Rivers (Doc’s kid) and Plumlee brother #3 (Marshall) coming in.
Michigan State, Kansas State, Pittsburgh, and Ohio State round out the pre-season Top 5, with traditional powers like UNC, Kentucky, Kansas, Syracuse, Florida, Gonzaga, and Georgetown all in the Top 20. And I like Temple and Wisconsin and some per-season keep an eye on teams.
F#ck You, From LeBron |
| Posted by bernieclemente on
on behalf of LeBron James...
Fuck you haters, and your damn right LeBron keeping a list of everybody who has talked shit.
'Should I be who you want me to be?'
'Should I accept my role as a villain?'
'Should I make you laugh?'
'Should I be who YOU want me to be?'
Says LeBron in his new Nike commercial.
All LeBron did was leave Cleveland. And Cleveland is the worst place in the country to live. Early this year in National Survey's: Worst City to Live: Cleveland; Worst Weather: Cleveland. This is a city that treats Bernie Kosar like a King amongst Kings. And the man who does reserve that respect, who should be the city's sports hero, Jim Brown, isn't even welcomed by the Cleveland Browns new brass.
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2010/09/jim_brown_mike_holmgren_wont_d.html
All the time, the worst shit imaginable happens to Cleveland. The Browns, getting stole right out from under the city's nose, only happens in Cleveland.
For all the bullshit the modern day pro athlete pulls and gets away with, LeBron is villified for leaving Cleveland.
Cleveland. A sports town who demands YOU respect them, because they loose so much.
Cleveland. A sports town where I once lived, but wasn't 'accepted' because I wasn't from there. It didn't matter if I went to a Browns game in a blizzard (and a 8-6 win over Buffalo) or that I had a job working at Jacobs Field for the Indians; I could never understand what its like to be a Cleveland fan.
Yeah, you loose, I get it.
Cleveland sucks. Who among us would want to live there? And if you did, and had the chance for a better life elsewhere, who would stay?
Cleveland Plain-Dealer writer Brian Windhorst, who made a name for himself covering LeBron, took a job with ESPN covering LeBron, and now has a job in Miami. Where is the outrage over that?
What if LeBron just wanted to move to a better city, Miami, where the girls, probably look a just a little better, and have the chance to play for multiple Championships. To define his legacy.
We heard for years about how Kobe only won his first three with Shaq, which he did as Shaq was the NBA Finals MVP in all three of those Championships. Who is to say he doesn't win three or five with Miami, and then move to New York to win a few more, just to prove he does belong amongst the Greatest of All-Times.
You have to own the Rings, and then we can debate how they were won.
I know, I know, it was the way he did it. Betraying Cleveland. Letting 'The Decision' happen.
What if his people talked him into, 'hey, we can raise $3 million for Charity...'
What if he already knew that Owner Dan Gilbert was a shit bird. Does anyone want to bet against me, that a marquee free agent will never sign with Cleveland, as long as Gilbert is owner, after the way he treated LeBron?
(honestly, i did think that 'letter' was hilarious though).
What if, LeBron got a lifetime exempt deal from ESPN? You do this for us, and we'll protect you through thick and thin. Part of the reason that Barry Bonds was the poster boy for the Steroid Era in baseball is because of what an asshole he was to the press. The press treated Barry like shit, and he treated them like shit right back. The problem with that is, the media can make you look like an asshole, and make most of the people believe whatever it is they tell them. Perhaps, just maybe, LeBron decided to make a lifetime ally with the World Wide Leader.
ESPN already gots his back. I saw an 8-highlight, 32-point PRESEASON performance the other night, because he is that good. And they showed it.
LeBron's legacy comes down to Championships, pure and simple. And he has a better chance to Win with Miami than he did anywhere else.
The Nike commercial asks...
'Should I be who YOU want me to be?'
No, LeBron.
Do what you need to do. And go win some fucking basketball games.
peace, and Wu-Tang Forever.
Greatest College Teams of All-Times |
Greatest College Teams of All-Times
I have an acquaintance who is the Number One educational speaker in the country on college recruiting. Jack speaks at 180 high schools throughout the country on annual basis.
Only 1 in 100 high school student-athletes receive a fully funded athletic scholarship at the Division 1 level. Part of his message to these high school kids and their parents is there is a place to play. And unless your part of that elite 0.8%, you need to get off the name game, and realize you are NOT going to a marquee Division I school.
Each summer I assist Jack with research and editing of his book that he sells at the schools he speaks at.
This year we added a page for each sport, from football to women’s tennis, named ‘The Name Game and National Championships’
(For Example)
Baseball
Division I
Defending Champion: University of South Carolina
Most Championships: University of Southern California (13)
Division II
Defending Champion: University of Southern Indiana
Most Championships: Florida Southern University (9)
Division III
Defending Champion: Illinois Wesleyan University
Most Championships: Marietta (OH) College (4)
NAIA
Defending Champion: Lubbock Christian (TX) University
Most Championships: Lewis-Clark State (ID) College (16)
Junior College
Defending Champion: Howard (TX) College
Most Championships: San Jacinto (TX) College (5)
The point is, while you may have never heard of St. Augustine’s College in North Carolina, if you run track, it would be a hell of a college to go to.
Even at the Division I level, we’re all familiar with the elite schools are in football and basketball; but how many of us know who dominates Track (LSU) or Softball (UCLA).
Also, I love Championships. Don't care what sport, if there is a Championship being played for on TV, I'm probably going to watch it. And if you read any of my blogs over at tSN, chances are it was about Championships. Its the reason the games are played for, and players and teams that win multiple Championships, deserve recognition above all others.
So without further ado, here is the list of the college teams that have won the most National Championships. (It should be noted, that I only recorded which school won the most for each sport at each division, so if Notre Dame has won 11 in football, they would NOT be included because Alabama won more.)
7 National Championships
Arizona State University Women’s Golf
University of California Los Angeles Women’s Water Polo
Kalamazoo (MI) College Men’s Tennis (DII)
Southern Nazarene (OK) University Women’s Basketball (NAIA)
Messiah (PA) College Men’s Soccer (DIII)
State University of New York-Cortland Women’s Cross Country (DIII)
Oklahoma City University Men’s Golf (NAIA)
Oklahoma City University Softball (NAIA)
Adelphia (NY) University Men’s Lacrosse (DII)
Drury (MO) University Women’s Swimming (DII)
Truman (MO) State University Women’s Swimming (DII)
8 National Championships
University of Tennessee Women’s Basketball
Stanford University Women’s Swimming
Villanova University Women’s Cross Country
Middlebury (VT) University Men’s Ice Hockey (DII)
Kentucky Wesleyan University Men’s Basketball (DII)
Monroe (NY) Community College Women’s Soccer (JC)
Lander (SC) University Men’s Tennis (DIII)
