Sorry, Adrian... That's Business
Posted by dougvantyle on Saturday, February 04, 2012 at 12:00:00 AM

This from Ben Maller @ Yahoo!

Nobody wants to hear a rich man whine, but this NFL star brings up a pretty good argument.

Adrian Peterson hatched what seemed like a good plan on Twitter to change his Minnesota Vikings uniform number from 28 to 23. That was last week. Now the star running back has changed his mind, blaming the power brokers behind pro football merchandise sales for spoiling his idea.

Peterson told his 212,000-plus Twitter followers that he "received a call" from an unnamed source informing him he'd have to buy all the jerseys that have been made with his No. 28 on them if he wanted to change his number. The Vikings star tweeted the amount of money"blew my mind!!!!!"

How much would it cost?

A cool $1,000,000 -- according to Peterson.

That's when the franchise running back unloaded on what he feels is an injustice to star players. Pointing out to his cyber minions that he's among the leaders in NFL jersey sales, Peterson complained that he doesn't "even get paid a million dollars" from his individual Nike sponsorship deal.

Sorry, Adrian...

Sorry, Ben...

Not a good argument...

Obviously neither of you have run a business...

I have...

It doesn't work like that...

The NFL and its retailers invested a million bucks in #28...

You wanna change your number...

You can eat the jerseys...

Not bad with a little ketchup...

Only the Super Bowl Counts...
Posted by dougvantyle on Thursday, February 02, 2012 at 10:58:21 PM

On the seventh day, God rested...

And on the eighth day...

He created the Super Bowl...

You see...

There was absolutely no life prior to the Super Bowl...

At least...

That’s what the NFL would like you believe...

The Patriots and Giants meet Sunday in Super Bowl XLVI...

Apparently...

There were no prior championships prior to the Super Bowl...

This is all we have, isn’t it???

Oh yeah...

There was football before the Super Bowl...

But no championships, right???

Just the regular season, right???

Then they just stopped playing, right???

Until next year, right???

Nothing mattered back then, did it???

Did they even keep stats back then, did they???

I heard they had some pretty swell players...

But they really don’t count, do they???

It was just a rehearsal, right???

After all...

Even if they did have championship games back then...

Since they weren’t SUPER BOWL titles...

They don’t count in the overall total...

At least that is what the NFL would like you to believe...

And what the media would like you to believe...

I never hear them talk about the good ole days...

The only things that are count are...

Super Bowl titles...

And Super Bowl appearances...

So and so has the most Super Bowl titles...

Such and such has the most Super Bowl appearances...

Detroit has never been to a Super Bowl...

And I guess that means they have zero titles, right???

Those games in ‘35, ‘52, ‘53, and ‘57...

They were just post season scrimmages, right???

Practice games, right???

We talkin’ ‘bout practice...

Not a game...

Not a game...

Not a game...

We talkin’ ‘bout practice...

Okay...

‘Nuffa dat...

And in one of those practices...

Way back before Pearl Harbor...

In ‘40...

The Chicago Bears bombed the Washington Redskins, 73-0...

But that didn’t count...

‘Cus it wasn’t in the Super Bowl...

And they were just messin’ around, weren’t they???

They even had a scrimmage go into overtime...

That was back in ‘57...

I think it was some actor named Don Ameche...

He scored the “so-called” winning touchdown...

And they stopped playing just like that...

But it didn’t matter, did it???

Because the game wasn’t named the Super Bowl...

Nobody cares about that stuff back then any more...

‘Cus sacking the quarterback was legal back then...

Now you can only pull the flag attached to his belt...

So just like the old AAFC and AFL...

Those games are pigments of our imaginations...

Yes, I said pigments...

As in pigskin...

But I guess if you count those scrimmages...

Or practice games...

The Packers have...

Thirteen championships...

But nobody really counts that high, do they???

And da Bears have nine...

But the first eight were insignifcant...

I guess we can’t give credit where credit is due...

Cus’ they weren’t in “The Big Game”...

That’s right...

I don’t think I can legally say...

S-p-r B-wl...

Cus I didn’t pay the NFL to say it...

I guess I don’t count either...

It Ain't That Easy When You Really Like Someone...
Posted by dougvantyle on Thursday, January 26, 2012 at 11:41:52 PM

Ever since I was a kid...

There were certain coaches I liked...

And certain coaches I didn’t like...

My first major dislike was...

At the risk of being yelled at...

By one of my former fellow blogettes...

Woody Hayes...

Never liked the guy...

Crotchety old man...

Terrific coach...

But he came across as the eternal grump...

You see...

I grew up in the Midwest...

Got my fill of him there...

Then moved to the West Coast...

And got my fill of him during Rose Bowl week...

Back then...

The Big Ten had a dumb no repeat rule...

You could only “Rose Bowl” it every other year...

Thank goodness for that...

So...

Woody would come traipsing to our neck of the woods...

Pretty much every other year...

And as the story goes...

I had a girlfriend from Ohio who loved the Buckeyes...

Darlyne...

She was obnoxious...

We argued all the time...

On New Year’s Day 1971...

We went to her aunt’s house...

Ohio State was playing Stanford that year...

The Stanford “Indians” back then...

Jim Plunkett was the Stanford quarterback...

She told me everybody there would be rooting for OSU...

I told her...

"Everybody except me..."

However...

Out of respect to the family...

I told her I would keep quiet...

Unless of course she opened her yap...

And I was pretty sure she’d do just that...

Well...

The first three quarters went well for the Buckeyes...

A 17-13 lead...

Then she started to get a bit cocky...

She always called me Douglas...

But it wasn’t just "Doug-las"...

It was that obnoxiously whiny accent of hers...

“Dawwwwg-laaaaasssss...”

So...

She decided to blow my cover...

“Dawwwwg-laaaaasssss...”

She bellowed...

“He’s rooooooting for Stannnnfurrrrrrd...”

“Yes, I am,” I exclaimed... And I told you I would keep quiet...”

“Unless you let the cat out of the bag... Which is what you just did...”

And ironically...

Right about then...

The momentum changed...

Stanford took the lead in the fourth quarter...

And never relinquished it...

And while the comeback was underway...

Someone asked about those thingies on the OSU helmets...

I quickly responded...

“Brownie Buttons...”

“When somebody makes a good play...”

“He gets a Brownie Button on the helmet...”

And much to her dismay...

The team with the Brownie Buttons succumbed...

And I couldn’t be happier...

Needless to say...

Dar-leeeeeeeen wasn’t thrilled with my boasting...

And our thing didn’t last much longer than that...

Back to Woody...

I cheered emphatically when he got canned....

Cue the video...

Good riddance to crabby old Woody...

You see...

If you don’t like somebody...

It’s pretty easy to rejoice when they mess up...

But when you DO like somebody...

And they slip up...

You have more empathy...

What Woody did was a sin of “CO”mission...

The 1978 Gator Bowl...

Punching Clemson’s Charlie Bauman...

After his interception clinched the win for the Tigers...

And...

Within a day or two...

Woody was gone...

Yipppeeee...

Yet...

In that same era...

I had my eye on another coach...

There was something pretty cool about him...

I don’t know if it was the glasses...

I don’t know if it was the schnozzzz...

What a beak he had...

And...

Even though I’d never been to Pennsylvania...

I really liked the guy...

He never seemed to shame himself or his team...

As the years went by...

I felt he wore out his welcome...

He needed to step aside...

And let somebody else do the coaching...

That was my only complaint about Joe Pa...

And amazingly...

He still had a measure of success in his later years...

I liked him...

And those PSU uniforms were perfect for a coach like that...

Not flashy...

But they looked good...

Real good...

Then came the scandal...

Joe Pa didn’t commit a sin of “CO”mission...

It was a sin of “O”mission...

He could have done more...

He SHOULD have done more...

But he DIDN’T do more...

And he was gone...

And rightfully so...

The buck stopped with Joe Pa...

Then came the hate and anger...

And as he left us this past weekend...

I saw cheering from many...

But I wasn’t happy...

I was sad...

Sad it ended the way it did...

Joe Pa deserved better than that...

But he didn’t do enough...

And he paid for it...

He may deserve the blame...

But I can’t turn on him...

And here’s why...

When you like a person...

I mean...

When you REALLY like a person...

And that person falls into disfavor...

It’s pretty difficult to switch gears...

There’s something deep inside of me...

Something that wants to give him the benefit of the doubt...

Especially because I remember the times...

When I second guessed myself...

And realized I could have done more...

I’ve been in Joe’s shoes...

As a teacher in California...

I am a mandated reporter...

I am required to report abuse...

Not to my superior...

But to Child Protective Services...

And I have made that call a time or two...

We are only required to call...

Not to investigate...

But after that call was made...

There’s something deep inside that said...

“I hope everything’s okay...”

I wanted to do more...

And I have asked the student if things were better...

Not to pry...

Only out of concern...

I have no idea what went on in Joe Pa’s mind...

But I am pretty sure...

Just like a call on a running play that went awry...

He wishes he would have done things differently..

At least in my mind...

I’d like to hope so...

Joe was better than that...

Getting Older...
Posted by dougvantyle on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 3:16:25 AM

Being fifty-seven isn’t THAT old...

But it IS older than I used to be..

I remember sports as a kid...

We played some kind of game nearly every day...

I don’t think I ever turned down an opportunity...

Lots of energy back then...

It was one of the biggest parts of my life...

Wiffle ball with my pals..

Basketball at the next door neighbors...

Football in the street...

“Go out to the fire hydrant and do a button hook...”

Boy, was I a great split end or what...

Little League...

I was the catcher...

The called me The Mouth...

I wouldn’t shut up behind the plate...

Eighth grade junior high football...

The smallest kid on the team...

Eighty-five pounds dripping wet...

And we went to a few sporting events...

Here and there...

High school football...

Major League Baseball and the NFL...

Rarely an NBA game...

And into my late teens...

I learned to love hockey...

Of course...

Sports on TV wasn’t what it is now...

Then into my twenties I got married...

Played in some softball leagues...

Bowling, too...

And when it came to sports on the tube...

I had to watch every game...

It drove the Mrs. crazy...

Then came the kids...

As they grew, they played sports...

And I slowly retired...

Lots of great memories watching them play...

Always looked for opportunities to take them to a game...

And we did...

Many of their friends got to go for the first time ever...

That really made it cool...

We would go to games as the budget would allow...

Weeknights...

Weekends...

Evenings...

Afternoons...

Then the kids started to fly the coop...

And I invited my adult friends...

Weeknights...

Weekends...

Evenings...

Afternoons...

Clippers season tickets...

Angel and Kings big game packages...

Dodger games occasionally...

Not every night...

Not even every week...

But just enough to keep me going...

But as the years went by...

I found myself watching less sports on television...

The internet arrived...

It kept me busy...

I would catch a big game...

Or the end of a game...

Or just bits and pieces...

My interest waned...

I had other priorities...

Volunteering at church kept me busy...

Other stuff, too...

And now here I am at age fifty-seven...

There has to be a real good reason to attend a weeknight game...

I’m a lot more selective now...

I’m like Donna Summer...

“I work hard for the money...”

And I’m not as willing to part with it...

We did get SDSU football season tix this year and last...

But I think...

If I don’t get them next year...

“I will survive...”

(Donna Summer comes in handy when you need her...)

So...

I’ve had my days in the sun...

At the ball park...

And in the arena...

And now I watch most of it on the tube...

Unless of course...

I have a good friend likefellow blogger Ark_Razor...

Who offered Kings tickets to us Thursday night...

On the glass...

Well...

Directly behind the glass...

The glass between me and the game...

You get the picture...

Thanks, Ark...

But here’s what I’ve been contemplating....

As I get older...

Sports has become less important to me...

I still need my fix from time to time....

But the times get further apart...

And I’m okay with that...

I guess writing blogs is filling a void that sports can’t fill...

I’d rather sit here and entertain you...

Than watch a game for two plus hours...

I still have to keep in touch with sports...

So I know what to write about...

But the glue that used to attach me to the TV is falling apart...

AND I’M PERFECTLY FINE WITH THAT, THANK YOU....

The Sports Box...
Posted by dougvantyle on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 12:29:58 AM

Please forgive me...

I really tried to avoid this...

I know you’ve had enough...

So...

I really don’t want to talk about this directly...

So...

Let’s try it indirectly...

There’s this box, you see...

It’s a sports box...

A box that commentators put athletes into...

Things like...

Pressure...

The media is obsessed about pressure...

Athletes are always under this kind of pressure...

And that kind of pressure...

Or so they say...

Pressure, pressure, pressure...

And that obsession leads to...

Overanalyzation...

Making things more complicated than they really are...

Some of the things they ask athletes...

No wonder why they get ticked at times...

Like I said...

Overanalyzation...

Some of these media peeps...

They have too much think time...

K.I.S.S...

Keep it simple, Stu...

So...

Let’s get back to that box...

Here’s my point...

Some athletes can’t be put into your standard sports box...

As a matter of fact...

I am thinking of one right now...

And...

Just so you don’t throw tomatoes at me...

I won’t mention any names for now...

This particular athlete plays football...

He takes snaps from the center position...

And he is stationed near the Rocky Mountains...

Get my drift???

And it totally cracks me up when he is interviewed...

And when he is analyzed...

They keep trying to put him into their sports box...

They talk about the pressure...

He ignores it...

They ask about his play...

He defers to his teammates...

This guy is different...

He understands the bigger picture...

He knows it’s not about him...

It's about HIM...

He just lets things come as they may...

In a way, he’s unflappable...

No matter what people say about him...

He just continues to do what he does...

As best he can...

Win or lose...

He knows where his bread is buttered...

From above...

Not on the football field...

Yet these analysts and naysayers continue on...

What makes this guy tick???

And when he tells them...

Many will say...

“He just needs to keep “that” to himself...”

And just like those silly end zone dances...

“His schtick is just his way of getting attention...”

And by the way...

“Sports and 'that' don’t mix...”

But this is what they don’t get...

Sports and “that" DO mix for him...

Sports and “that” are the essence of him...

That is who he is...

He’s not what many make him out to be...

He understand the bigger picture...

He gets a bigger kick out of building a hospital...

And a bigger kick out of being a humanitarian...

The game is just the cherry on top...

Check that...

It’s not the cherry...

It’s the vehicle...

It’s how he gets to where he’s going...

And then we hear things like...

HE” has more important things than who wins...

Well...

Yes, “HE” does...

And that’s not the point...

Why can’t a person just be thankful for his blessings???

Did you ever consider that???

Being as thankful for scoring a touchdown...

Or winning a game...

As you are for the food you are about to partake...

Or for the other blessings in your life...

It’s as simple as that...

Now...

Back to the media mouths and naysayers...

One proclaimed...

He was under pressure all week long before the game...

Sorry, fella...

No he wasn’t...

Again...

He understands the bigger picture...

It’s not about football...

He doesn’t worry about pressure...

He just does the best he can...

And leaves the results to his higher power...

You see...

With him...

There is no box...

It’s not about Tim...

.

It’s about HIM...

He is thankful for his blessings...

And he learns from his mistakes...

It’s as simple as that..

.

Trust me...

It’s as simple as that...

Leigh Steinberg Files Chapter Seven Bankruptcy
Posted by dougvantyle on Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at 11:37:31 PM

The following is Leigh Steinberg's statement on facebook regarding his banruptcy and other personal issues.

Statement

The public interest in my financial affairs and the inaccurate descriptions of my situation have led me to write this column: I filed for Chapter 7 personal bankruptcy.

I delayed taking this step for a number of years because of my moral and legal obligation to people who advanced me funds or performed services in good faith. But the constant and aggressive collection efforts and press initiatives undertaken by creditors have harassed my family and prevented me from working to be able to pay these debts. Prospective clients have been pushed away after receiving notice of my debts. It doesn't seem logical to prevent a person who owes you money from working in their chosen field by attempting to ruin his reputation, but that is what has happened. I have lived with this in recent years, and it is time to follow a more constructive path.

I have struggled with alcohol for a number of years. In the past five or six years I began to check out episodically for short periods. My judgment and oversight of my affairs was not consistent and at times impaired. I am responsible for my own addiction -- no one forced me to drink -- and in revealing my struggle with alcoholism, I am in no way justifying or excusing my circumstance. But I discuss it to provide context as well as understanding and inspiration to those who also battle addictive behavior. I surrendered to the reality that I was an alcoholic and my behavior was impacting family and associates in March 2010. I surrendered to the concept that until I tackled alcoholism, other priorities needed to be put aside.

I lived in Sober Living for a time and began to actively work a 12-step program. I was aided in this effort with the help of a loving family, supportive friends, a closer relationship with a Higher Power, and a remarkable fellowship. Debt and default judgments occurred during this period. I am responsible for these debts. But my priority was sobriety, and I have been continuously sober since that time.

I have tried during the past 40 years to make a positive impact on this nation and the athletic community and to make a contribution to young men's lives. This has involved emphasizing core values such as self respect, nurturing family, spiritual connections, and active involvement in community. I've helped form high school and college scholarship funds and foundations to tackle basic issues. Our athletes have raised more than $660 million for charity. I created a national training program for volunteers fighting racism and hate, along with funding numerous other programs for good.

My Dad instilled in me two core values: 1) Treasure relationships -- especially family. 2) Help make a difference in the world by aiding the less fortunate. Sponsor-supported Super Bowl parties for the past 25 years have raised money to send a water machine to Haiti during the earthquake and fund causes such as autism research and the environment among others. Our company has done live television interactivity with troops in Iraq and wounded soldiers in military hospitals. But the grip of alcohol made me less effective in upholding those values.

I plan to change that by helping athletes, fighting climate change through the Sporting Green Alliance, raising awareness about the undiagnosed health epidemic of concussions, bringing pro football to Southern California, and combating steroid and supplement abuse in high schools, combating teen bullying, and other community and charitable efforts.

When a bench warrant for me relating to my debt was authorized last month, the portrait painted in the media was that a "missed hearing" was the equivalent of my hiding or running from the law. That couldn't be further from the truth. I have been rebuilding a business that will be active in representation, consultation and content supply. We have a website, blog, Facebook and interactive efforts. I mention public appearances and speeches on these sites. I was never unavailable except for the period in early sobriety, which was a necessary aspect of the program. I was a loyal tenant of the Irvine Company for more than 20 years before expensive rent and these other difficulties forced us to close that office two years ago. A hearing on the matter was scheduled and my attorney agreed to change the date and called the night before to tell me not to show up. He failed to reschedule, didn't appear at the hearing that went on without my knowledge, and didn't inform me. I am responsible for all my actions, but I assumed I could rely on counsel.

The underlying cause of my inability to earn money and resolve my debt situation occurred in 2003. One of my employees admitted that --without my knowledge -- he had taken a $300,000 loan from one of our NFL clients. It was exactly the kind of transaction that I had specifically forbidden, and it violated NFL Players Association regulations. The NFL player understandably fired me, then went to a rival agency. As a matter of background, you should know that this company is run by an agent who used to work at our firm. We filed a lawsuit to challenge the way this agent had left our firm, and we won. Two attorneys on the losing side are involved in the current case concerning my debt.

Since then, I have made repeated offers to re-pay the player far more than the original $300,000. There are many legal complexities, but in a nutshell, his representatives -- the ones who lost the lawsuit -- have insisted to me on collecting monies without informing the NFLPA that the matter is settled. This point is crucial because I did not apply for recertification by the union after one of their agents (and his wife) filed suit against me in 2006. If I cannot be recertified, I cannot work in the field that I have been trained in, which is to the benefit of this rival agent. Keeping me out of business seems to be a priority above collecting the debt, and although substantial payments have been made, the demand is now four times the original amount. My attempts to rebuild my life have been hamstrung. I have attempted to make amends for the damage that my drinking caused to others. I believe I have many productive years ahead and hope through this process that once again I will be able to make a positive impact on the lives of athletes and the world.

Where's My Gong???
Posted by dougvantyle on Thursday, January 05, 2012 at 10:52:58 PM

Forget American Idol’s Got Talent...

What we need...

Is a Gong Show for sports...

And given my rich broadcasting background...

I nominate myself as the host...

Anybody got a gong hangin’ around the abode???

And as the emcee...

I have my first victim...

This guy has way worn out his welcome...

And definitely deserves to be gonged...

As an NFL coach...

Expectations are high every year...

And results are low...

Just when it looks like his team seems ripe for a title...

Something goes wrong...

And fans once again...

Look forward to next year...

As a Chargers’ fan...

I have never liked the guy from day one...

And I’m not the only one...

He has plenty who agree with me...

Flat out...

The guy should not be an NFL head coach...

Well...

Once again...

It looks like he will...

Once again...

Be the head coach next year...

Once again...

I am fed up with the guy...

Granted...

He’s a pretty good assistant coach...

But as far as a head coach is concerned...

This Chargers' fan...

Is fed up with his act...

It’s time to move on, folks...

There are better ways to motivate your team...

And his ways clearly don’t work...

Yes...

He has had SOME success...

But in most instances...

A big let down...

And it’s unfair to the fans...

They deserve much better than what he has to offer...

And of course...

I am speaking of...

Bang a Gong...

It’s T-Rex himself...

New York Jets Coach...

Rex Ryan...

Gotcha...

The fact is...

I can probably stomach another year of...

The Norv in San Diego...

Because at least I know what to expect...

But Rex needs to be run out of NYC...

The Big Apple’s Big Worm...

Bubba the Blow Hard...

Truth be told...

I could care less about the Jets...

But...

Team Rex is a tired act...

It’s one thing to strive to win the Super Bowl...

Just keep your mouth shut and do it, Rex...

And let your actions speak louder...

Every week there’s a target on your back, Rex...

Because you opened your big mouth...

Ever heard of “Under the Radar”???

Fact is...

You are torpedo-ing your own team, Rex...

Nice team chemistry, Rex...

Me thinks they call it...

Nitroglycerin...

Excuuuuuuse me, Rex...

Maybe you should go coach...

Errrrr...

Manage...

In the WWE...

That way...

You can have more control over your success...

You can even write an occasional script or two...

And you can hype Team Rex to your hearts content...

And give us NFL fans...

Especially the Jets fans...

A break from your worn out mantra...

So...

As much as I would like to see The Norv unemployed...

And...

As much as I would like to see Ray Lewis...

Lose every game...

Until the end of time...

I would rather see...

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson...

Take some of his Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder...

Slap it on your tushie...

Diaper you up...

And send you to another TV show...

Bozo the Clown...

That Feelin' Again...
Posted by dougvantyle on Friday, December 16, 2011 at 12:50:35 AM

The Lovely Miss Kim and I live in a small place...

A very small place...

A converted garage...

Not much room to move around...

And I'm a guy who likes to move around...

In essence...

I drive her crazy...

Up and down...

Back and forth from the TV to the computer...

"WILL YOOOO JUST SIT DOWN AND STAY PUT!" she says...

I think I found my cure...

It's that guy...

You know...

Him...

The one in the blue and the orange...

The one who puts his hands on another guy's crotch...

He takes that oblong brown ball...

And he hands it to people...

Or he wobbles an imperfect throw to other people...

Sometimes too high...

Sometimes too low...

Occasionally right too them...

But sometimes they drop it...

Now that's just the first forty-five to fifty-five minutes...

Then come those last five minutes or so...

And things change...

Those wobbly passes are now perfect spirals...

The drops are now catches...

Down by three, seven, or ten in the last five???

No problem...

All of a sudden...

It's that feelin' again...

It's mystical...

And whether or not you'll admit it...

The next thing you know...

"Everybody's dancin' in the moonlight..."

And just like the song...

"It's a supernatural delight..."

King Harvest has done it again...

When "he" plays..

It's always a full moon...

Down late???

No problem...

He...

And the defense...

Have gotcha right where they wantcha...

It's that feelin' again...

I'm mesmerized...

I can't sit...

But I can't walk around either...

I have to stand...

I have to watch...

It's hypnotic...

Loooook intoooooo myyyy eyeeeeeee...

Yooooo are getting sleeeeeepppeee....

Yooooo will run out of bowwwwwwnnnds....

Yoooo will stop zeeeee cloooooock...

Yooooo will fummmble zeeeee baaaalllll...

It's the feelin' I had when I first saw Magic Johnson own the game...

Something magical is going on here...

This isn't real...

Jack Buck said it best, didn't he???

"I don't believe what I just saw..."

So just sit back and relax...

Don't you dare fight the feelin'...

Because it may never come this way again...
