A Tribute to a Friend 4-1-12

Hello Gabbers, as you will read today this is not going to be one of my typical sports filled blog it is going to be kind of serious and to the point. First, what is a true friend...

A true friend sticks by you through thick or thin,

through good times and bad,

even when you bury your son.

You never can replace a true friend when they are gone, because they are hard to find.

Sure you have your wife,

but in most cases, she has only been there for part of your life.

Back in 1987,  a  year or so after I was discharged from the Navy I started working  for a small grocery chain in Genesee County named Kessel Foods and as I stated earlier I found a true friend......

Jerry was one of many  of my mentors when I first started in the grocery business, who  took me under his wing and taught me the ropes. Our friendship was instant and remains strong to this day.

The first thing I found out about Jerry  other than he loved Miller High Life, was he was an absolute sports fanatic. He loved his Tigers back then, could tell you everything about the Tiger teams of the 50s, 60s and 70s along with naming the players on the teams. So we started attending Tigers games the following summer, and  since Jerry has a disability I always went to the farm and picked him up. His mother Pearl would say please bring him  home safe and we would be off on our way............

And then I found about his love for hockey, so we started attending Flint Spirits hockey games, where we seen goalies like Eddie Belfour up in Saginaw, Mike Richter in Flint mature into NHL goalies.

Then one year I found about his love for the Lions, he would tell me about when he was younger how good teams like the Lions and Browns were back in 50s and 60s. So I repaid him for this by taking him to watch Barry Sanders, man that kid could run, look at him now in the Hall of Fame.......

And then I found out about his love for Michigan football, and his hatred growing for Ohio State. I looked forward to visiting and watching football with him, it is along with college basketball one of his favorite sports to watch. Hell anything sports related he would watch.......

Well now Jerry is in a battle for his life, with the odds stacked against pretty much against him his colon cancer has returned again........

Two years ago, Jerry had a good portion of his colon and his liver removed and the doctors thought they took enough for him to live his life without cancer returning. Jerry's older brother a health nut, misled Jerry telling him all of this natural crap he was eating everyday would keep his cancer from returning. I doubted it from the get go, knowing nothing can keep cancer from returning.......

So as I watch my friend struggle, basically fighting for his life. I realized that there is nothing more important than a true friend. My first of two trips that day I watched his brothers and sister try to badger Michelle and myself into signing a medical power of attorney, for which I did not sign giving them all the power to control the remaining part of his life.

As true friends really do they let their best friend of 26 years die on their own terms, and not someone else's who are just looking for the easy way out of situations like this.

Jerry looked at me Thursday night, and said this is my best friend of 26 years I am not going to let him down and ate his first full meal in quite a while that day.

Jerry starts chemo on Tuesday, I am proud of him because he made that decision on his own....

Jerry has decided not to give up after all, and decided as he put to "FUCKING FIGHT" to the end.

Who knows where and when Jerry's battle with cancer will take him over the next year, and for that matter whether or not he will even survive..

Sports is irrelevant as we all know, its just a small portion of our lives that we occupy for a short period of time. We either played it for fun, or in some cases in high school or college. But in Jerry's case, sports was a major part of his life and I am glad to say that I could take him to enough live events during our time as friends.....

So fuck the part of his family that were being selfish bastards, and taking the easy way out. They can officially kiss my ass, because I want nothing to do with them anymore. I told Jerry, that if no one wants him he can come live with me. It will never happen because of his disability, those  greedy bastards will want his money..........

"Peace Be With You My Friend," if we never get to attend another game together. We will always have the memory from those games that we attended. You were and always will be my best friend.....
