Friday Roundtable: FESTIVUS BEGINS!
Category: FEATURED

Woah.  Thanksgiving came and went so fast, I fell asleep on the sofa and blammo - it's Friday!  We have a very special Friday Roundtable this week for after Thanksgiving the next Holiday comes forth.  Yes, Festivus!  December 23rd on the calendar marks the greatest of all possible holidays.  I'm sorry I've posted so late in the day: My 4-year boy changed the XBox language to German and we've been trying to figure out how to get it back.

As you may well be aware, “Festivus” was not created by the Baltimore Ravens enroute to their Super Bowl XXXV victory – it was merely borrowed. However, we will be borrowing the term representative of the final stage of the Ravens’ glory – Festivus Maximus. YouGab Style!

The Festivus holiday is comprised of two parts: the “Airing of Grievances” and the “Feats of Strength.” As wikipedia recalls (and if it is on Wikipedia, it MUST be truth) imbibing is encouraged, and hence, Duffs are on tap for the mere price of $0.015.

The Airing of Grievances consists of lashing out at others and the world about how one has been disappointed in the past year. This year, we have pictures and as such, we bring you the first official glimpses of the Official Awards.

The Sleestak Awards honor the legacy of the most notorious, controversial, and/or worst actors in the sports world and how THEY have disappointed US.

The categories are:

SS1 - Worst deal (signing, trade, or, the opposite, NON signing or trade) in any sport in 2009
SS2 - Worst player/manager/coach on field performance of 2009
SS3 - Most notorious quotation from the sporting world of 2009
SS4 - Dumbest off field transgression of 2009
and of course, the notorious...
SS5 - Sleestak of 2009.

“Feats of Strength” is the final tradition observed in the celebration of Festivus. Traditionally, the head of the household selects one person at the Festivus celebration and challenges that person to a wrestling match. Since I have no such interest in “wrastling” with anyone – which of course presumes I am the head of the household here – we’ve come up with something a little more appropriate: The now renamed "Gab Cup": Those sporting people or sporting events of 2009 worthy of note in the following categories:

GC1 - Best sporting moment of 2009 This is a singular moment in time – for instance, it is the one play in the game as opposed to…

GC2 - Most outstanding sporting achievement of 2009 which could be a collection of achievements: the difference between a game winning field goal and winning the world series

GC3 - Most outstanding athlete/team of 2009

And perhaps those awards most of interest to the YGS community:

GC4 - Most outstanding blogger of 2009

AND last but not least - the crème de la crème of the GAB CUP awards

GC5 – The single most outstanding Gab blog entry of 2009

NB:As much as I would appreciate your thoughts and without rushing to presume that anyone would go there...please no votes for yours truly.

Through December 4, I will be accepting nominations for two - not one, but the two, TWO, TWO sets of awards to be presented on Festivus. Everyone is not only encouraged, but are in fact CHARGED with nominating your Gab Cup and Sleestak favorites as patrons of Mo's. It is your "Categorical Imperative" as stated in the Mo's Tavern description. Don't let us down!!

NOMINATIONS: Please either leave your nominations for these awards in the comments with the subject line representing the award for which you're making your nomination. Alternatively, feel free to tag your own blog entry with either "Gab Cup" or "Sleestak Awards" (please, please, please - use these tags, it'll be hell for me to compile the nominations if you're using a different tag) or simply PM me (or email to mo@morrisseyweb.com) your nominations by DECEMBER 4.

Now, for the Friday Roundtable on December 4, we will begin voting on the top nominees for all the awards.

Take your time to troll the site, grab you favorites and let me know.

Have a wonderful Festivus season and welcome to the first annual YouGab Festivus Awards!
